Handley Rock (Redwood City, CA)

Mike Arechiga reports...

It's Friday, and I'm counting the seconds for the workday to end, so I can go to Handley rock to do a little bouldering before the rain starts. The clouds look threatening, but not one drop of rainfalls. The only good thing about my job is that it is only ten minutes away from climbing and bouldering at Handley rock. This small sandstone outcropping is tucked away in the hills of Redwood City. Handley rock is a two-tiered formation. Each tier about 30 feet in height. The upper tier has seven steep and challenging top rope climbs. The lower tier is a slab. With three real fun top rope climbs. The bouldering is good, but the landings are not. There is some glass on the ground, so watch your step. The view of the Bay Area from top of the upper tier is really nice. If you live in the Mid-Peninsula, and you are tired of pumping plastic after work, and you have never been to Handley rock. Give it a try, and did I mention if you go to Handley rock you probably be the only climber there.

To find Handley rock. Take 280 to the Edgewood Rd. east. Turn right on Cordilleras. Turn right on Lakeview. Turn right on Sylvan. Turn left on Handley Trail Rd. From there you will see the rock. Happy Climbing

I was glad to see directions to Handley Rock on your website - I've been meaning to go find it for some time now. I know from a friend that, out of consideration for the residents in the area, the 3rd weekend of every month is a "no-climbing" weekend at Handley rock, and I thought maybe you might want to mention that with the directions...
