Greg Daughtry (gmdaught@ethergate.com) reveals a novel way of securing a Mariner's Knot. The Mariner's Knot is releasable under load, which makes it an important knot for self-rescue applications such as escaping the belay.

1. Tie the standard Mariner's knot by looping a bight of cord/webbing around a carabiner twice. Then loop the bight around itself several times. Each loop you make adds more friction in the knot and makes it easier to secure.

2. Secure the Mariner's knot so that it won't unravel. The Mariner's knot is prone to unraveling when it is unweighted, so you need to secure the bight to itself. To do so, just feed half of the remaining bight between the load strands. This will give you two little loops to clip with a carabiner.

3. Clip the two loops with a carabiner and you're done. This knot comes undone easily when you unclip the carabiner.
