Munginella lost in the woods
|
Tucked away in a cozy nook near Lower Yosemite Falls, Munginella
waits for those who can find it. Given its obscure approach,
Munginella is a marvelously uncrowded three pitch
5.6 that is just a short hike from the shuttle bus stop.
Well, it's a short hike if you know where to go.
On an early Friday morning at the end of August, Chris, Pat,
Karlee, Christian, Lisa, Jim, Victor and Karluu all converge
on the Yosemite Falls parking lot. Karlee sprints off with
Chris and Pat in a mad dash to be the first up Munginella.
The race becomes a foregone conclusion as Karluu realizes
the rest of the gang is still ... racking up.

Some time later, the straggling crew wanders off in search
of destinations unknown, cowbells a-klanking as crowds
of gawking tourists look on. "Are you climbers?" "Yes"
"Where are you going?" "We don't know".
After fruitless, interminable meandering in search of the fabled
"tree with a disk nailed to it", the voice of the noble Karlee singing
brings hope to otherwise despairing souls.
Soon everyone is comfortably gathered in the shade of the tree
at the base of Munginella. Mission accomplished.

The question floats out of thin air, innocent yet deadly,
a knife that slices through the convivial babble of
climbers getting ready for the first climb of the weekend.
"So...who gets the first lead?"
|
|
All eyes turn to Lisa, who blanches and mumbles something about
"first multi-pitch". Her companions are conveniently deaf.
|
|
The day passes in unhurried comfort, adorned with the occasional
swear word drifting down like an autumn leaf to decorate
the hours that slide companionably by. "I'm gonna die!"
"God #@!@#$!"
But progress is made, and breathtaking views of Sunnyside Bench
and Lost Arrow Spire reward our leisurely ascent.

"Has anyone seen Karl Baba?"
"Uh...not for a couple of hours..."
"So, how do we get down?"
